  1. Is your curriculum comprehensive on all areas of makeup artistry (i.e. beauty, fashion, video, fix, etc.) or does the school or program specialize in one specific area?
  2. What credentials do your instructors have? Are they recent graduates or veteran working professionals?
  3. Where did your teachers learn their craft?
  4. What are the school owner’s credentials?
  5. Does the owner have hands-on participation?
  6. Does your school provide the names of past graduates for reference? Who are some of your successful past graduates?
  7. What kind of business training for freelance makeup artists do you provide?
  8. Do you offer assistance with job placement? Do you have any apprenticeship or intern programs?
  9. When did you last update your curriculum to accommodate new technology? What did you include?
  10. I know that state laws forbid schools from guaranteeing employment. How then is your school able to assist in providing a graduate with placement assistance?
  11. Are you affiliated with a television studio or real media facility that can provide students with real world experience?
  12. Can I go online to a site where I can actually see the owner of your school doing make-up, lecturing and interacting with other veteran make-up artists? If not, how do I know the owner of your school is a makeup artist with credibility and history?
  13. Does your school provide a large screen theater where students can study makeup from classic as well as current motion pictures and television shows?
  14. Some makeup artists may be great at their craft but do not teach well. How do your instructors rank as teachers and does the school owner provide continuous training for the instructors. If so, how?
  15. How many academy and award winning make-up artists are part of your training process?
  16. Do you feel it is important to teach the history of make-up? Why?
  17. Do you prepare your students to be set ready (i.e. on-set etiquette, assisting etiquette)?
  18. Are graduates prepared to successfully complete a makeup artistry proficiency examination?
  19. Do you offer online training or refresher courses?
  20. Does your school provide online training that I can take prior to attending hands on classes? If so, what are the credentials of the online instructors?
  21. Does your online training program enable its students to attend hands on workshops during their online training schedule?
  22. I know that state laws require that all schools enroll everyone and not discriminate. How have you designed or re-designed your enrollment process to be selective, so that individuals who are not well suited for the profession be appropriately advised? How does your online program assist in that process?
  23. Can students of your online training receive certification from your school?
  24. Do instructors from the online training programs also teach at the hands on school?
  25. Can a student create a custom class schedule, which incorporates in-home online training with hands on workshop time at the school?
  26. Is a proficiency examination required at the end of your hands on and online class?
  27. Does your online training program feature live interactive lectures where I can ask questions while viewing my online training?
  28. Is the owner of your school an instructor of your online training?
  29. Do you have on-site labs for practice? How much extra help is available?
  30. Considering today’s economy, what special financial arrangements and payments plans have you devised as an economic stimulus package?
  31. Do you offer lifetime discounts on the purchasing of cosmetics products?
  32. What distinguishes your school from the others?
  33. Does the school have a scheduled list of classic motion pictures which the students are required to view and to create written reports concerning the makeup shown? Do these films date back to the early silent films and progress through the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and up to current time?
  34. Does the school have one or two professional, overhead lighting grided sound stages where the intricacies of motion picture and television lighting can be taught detailing light and its relevancy to makeup artistry?
  35. Are the schools HD cameras truly professional cameras similar to those used at ABC, NBC, or CBS television or are the small home type HD versions?
  36. Does the school provide a means by which students can digitally photograph all of their work?
  37. Does the school provide the student with the skills and resources to build their portfolio and resume?
  38. How many Academy Award and Emmy Award winning makeup artists do the students meet and learn from during their scheduled time in class?
  39. Does the school follow strict class protocol concerning proper professional hygiene and dress codes for its student body and faculty?
  40. Does the school provide health and fitness lectures pertaining to building on-the-job good habits?
  41. To what extent does your school instruct concerning CGI and its impact on the media makeup profession?
