Professional Make-up Artistry Course Outline

Day: (M–F / 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. / 11 weeks) 330 hours

The following outline describes the Professional Make-up Artistry Program and its components. Beauty, Old Age, Bald Cap, Hairwork, Character, Monster, and Prosthetics may also be taken individually (see “Entrance Requirements and Enrollment”). All phases together constitute the Professional Make-up Artistry Program.

I. Beauty Make-up
Female and male corrective Make-up for all media

Beauty Make-up for motion picture, television, still photography, and theatrical (stage)

Beauty Make-up for salon application (not for state license)
8 hrs.

Classic Beauty Make-up (Straight and clean beauty)
9 hrs.

Classic Glamour Make-up
9 hrs.

Natural High Fashion Make-up and Fantasy Beauty Make-up
9 hrs.

Beauty Make-up is broken down as follows: base selection and application, shading application, highlight application, moist or oil base cheek and color glow application, powder application, dry cheek color and color glow area application plus powder mute, iridescent powder punch, eye color or upper lid line shading application, upper lid liner or shading accentuation, actual upper lid highlight application and under-arch highlight application, lower lid line application, eyebrow application, first mascara application (upper and lower lashes), second mascara application (upper and lower lashes), lip line, lip color, lip shading, lip highlighting, gloss application, corrective lip lining and adjustment.
II. Old Age Make-up
Theory of old age Make-up for motion picture, television, and theatrical (stage)

Wrinkle application (paint)

Hair graying

Age marks (Veins, Broken capillaries, Hand Make-up, and Liver spots).

Rubber stretch and stipple, utilizing deammoniated liquid rubber.
3 hrs.

Removal of old age stretch and stipple and paint and powder.
2 hrs.

Chronological age vs. environmental, health, hereditary, and psychological influences.

III. Bald Cap

Cap selection and manufacturing

IV. Hairwork

V. Character Make-up
(Injury Simulation)

Injury Simulation to include: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns, cuts, scratches, bruises, black eyes, broken noses, cauliflower ears, sunburned forehead and lips, raised scars, warts, pimples, stipple beard, tooth gold and silver blocking, discolored and rotten teeth, rabid effect, tattoos, bullet holes, compound fractures, blood tubing and rigging effects, and menthol blower technique (tearing effect) Clown and Mime Make-up and Chinese opera Make-up designs

Lectures and discussions concerning elves, gnomes, fairies, sprites, witches, and other fantasy characters.
3 hrs.

Lectures and discussions concerning historical characters
and make-up design for the Elizabethan theater.
3 hrs.

VI. Make-up Production
(Career Development)
6 hrs.

Topics to include: resumes, business cards, portfolios, set etiquette, coordination of make- up with other departments, how and where to look for work, tracking productions, contract negotiations, and deal memos.
VII. Monster Make-up

Frankenstein's monster as done originally
by Jack Pierce in 1931.

Dracula in the style of the Bela Lugosi character.
4 hrs.

Werewolf in the style of the Lon Chaney, Jr. version.
4 hrs.

Mummy in the style of the Boris Karloff version by Jack Pierce
